VICKSBURG, Miss. â Before students returned to classrooms this fall, Vicksburg Warren School District principals and directors came together for a full day of reflection, collaboration and planning at the District Visioning and Alignment Session, held Wednesday, July 22, at Central Office.
The training brought the district's school and department leaders together to take stock of the work accomplished over the past three years and to build a shared understanding of where the district is headed next.
"Over the past three years, we have intentionally laid the foundation for our district's future through our strategic priorities, Portrait of a Graduate, instructional initiatives, leadership development and systems of support," district officials said in an invitation sent to attendees ahead of the session. "Now it is time to step back and see how all of these pieces fit together."
For the past three years, VWSD has rolled out a series of major initiatives, including its strategic priorities, the Portrait of a Graduate framework, new instructional initiatives, leadership development programming and systems of support for schools. Individually, each has shaped how the district operates. The visioning session was designed to link those efforts into a single, unified direction.
District leaders said the goal was to ensure that every principal, assistant principal and director, regardless of building or department, understands not only the district's overall vision, but the specific role each plays in carrying it out.
"This session will connect our work into one unified vision and ensure every leader understands where we are headed and the important role each of us plays in bringing that vision to life," the invitation stated. "As leaders, we set the tone for our schools and departments. When we are aligned around a shared vision, our decisions are more intentional, our communication is more consistent, and our impact on students is even greater."
The session was facilitated with support from AASA, The School Superintendents Association's Leadership Network. Beth Silveria, AASA senior director of the Leadership Network, said the team's charge was to help district leaders see how years of individual efforts connect into one coherent whole.
"We were charged with really helping to bring leadership into that alignment and coherence space, really thinking about how all of the pieces and parts that everybody has worked so hard on creating over the last couple of years fit with the many things that have also been going on and being built in the district over several years," Silveria said. "How do we ensure that information is shared across leadership, but also into the schools, so that we can put students first?"
Shannon King, AASA vice president of the Leadership Network, said the day reflected a hallmark of the district's leadership.
"One thing that's always struck me about Dr. Holloway and this team is just how student-focused they are. Everyone really wants to keep the main thing the main thing," King said. "Today just showed how, when people come together, collaborate, and are willing to be vulnerable and share the challenges and the possibilities, amazing things can happen. I hope we'll be able to continue to build on the reflections of today throughout the year to keep that spirit of continuous improvement going."
By bringing every school and district leader into the same room before the first day of school, VWSD aimed to start the year with a common understanding among the people who set the tone in classrooms, hallways and offices across the district.
Lakesha Batty, principal of Vicksburg Intermediate School, said the session offered something essential for growth: a chance to reconnect around shared learning.
"It was great to see all of the principals and directors come back together," Batty said. "Today, we shared the same space to hear the same learning, the same knowledge, and to truly work together toward the same goal. We got a chance to lean into the intricacies of each other's work and have a newfound appreciation of it."
Batty added that the day also gave leaders room to connect on a personal level.
"We also had a safe place to just be," she said. "We got a chance to be like our teachers, where we can share that camaraderie. Keeping the main thing the main thing, focus on the work, while also letting down the walls and just being ourselves and having a good time doing it."
Organizers said the alignment built during the session is expected to translate into more consistent communication and decision-making across schools throughout the year, as leaders carry the shared vision back to their buildings and teams.
The District Visioning and Alignment Session is part of a broader effort by Vicksburg Warren School District to strengthen leadership development and ensure that strategic work at the district level is felt directly in schools and classrooms.
