Students at Bovina Elementary School had the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and explore the world of soil science during an engaging classroom visit with Dr. Michel Wynter from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC).
Dr. Wynter guided Bovina’s second-grade students through a fun and educational soil experiment aimed at helping them better understand the ground beneath their feet. Using samples similar to what might be found in their own backyards, students conducted two classic tests: the ribbon test and a water infiltration test.
The goal? To determine the type of soil they were working with—clay, silt, or sand. With Dr. Wynter's expert guidance, students learned how different soil types react to water and pressure, and how soil composition affects the environment, gardening, and construction.
This hands-on learning experience not only tied directly to science standards but also sparked curiosity and excitement among students. The day was captured in a special moment with second-graders Paisleigh Ashley and Noah Barlow, joined by Dr. Wynter and teacher Regina Renot-Mattei.
VWSD is grateful for its continued partnership with ERDC and the real-world learning opportunities they bring into the classroom. Experiences like this help students connect science to everyday life and inspire future scientists right here in Vicksburg.
