VICKSBURG, Miss. — The Vicksburg Warren School District proudly announces the hiring of David Sanders as the new Head Boys’ Basketball Coach at Vicksburg High School, bringing one of Mississippi’s most respected basketball leaders to the River City.
Coach Sanders arrives with an outstanding record of success, a championship pedigree, and a reputation for developing student-athletes both on and off the court. A former standout at Provine High School and Ole Miss basketball great, Sanders has built winning programs while mentoring young men and positively impacting communities across Mississippi.
Sanders is widely recognized for his highly successful tenure as head boys’ basketball coach at Callaway High School, where he transformed the Chargers into one of Mississippi’s premier programs. During his eight seasons at Callaway, Sanders compiled an impressive 182-40 record and led the program to three MHSAA State Championships in 2014, 2015, and 2020. His teams also captured six district championships and earned multiple deep playoff appearances while gaining statewide respect for their discipline, toughness, and consistency. Under his leadership, numerous student-athletes earned opportunities to continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level.
Following his success at Callaway, Sanders served as head men’s basketball coach at Copiah-Lincoln Community College from 2021-2025. In just his second season, he guided the Wolves to their first MACCC Championship since 1998-1999 and was named MACCC Coach of the Year.
As a player, Sanders earned statewide honors including Mississippi Mr. Basketball, Gatorade Player of the Year, All-State, and All-Metro recognition. He played collegiately at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), where he was a three-year letterman and starter on the Rebels’ Sweet Sixteen team that finished ninth nationally during the 2000-2001 season. While at Ole Miss, Sanders earned team honors including Most Valuable Player and Best Defensive Player. He later continued his playing career professionally in the Icelandic, Swiss, and Turkish Leagues.
