VICKSBURG, Miss. (Aug. 5, 2025) – As students across the Vicksburg-Warren School District return to school, drivers are reminded to follow all school bus safety laws to help ensure a safe start to the academic year.

According to Mississippi law, specifically Nathan’s Law (Miss. Code § 63-3-615), drivers must stop at least 10 feet away from a school bus that is loading or unloading children. This applies whether the driver is approaching the bus from behind or coming from the opposite direction on undivided roads. Vehicles must remain stopped until the bus resumes motion, the red lights are no longer flashing, and the stop-arm has been retracted.

An exception applies on roadways divided by a physical barrier or with four or more lanes—where drivers traveling in the opposite direction are not required to stop.

Failure to follow the law can result in serious consequences. First-time offenders may be fined between $350 and $750, and repeat offenders can face fines ranging from $750 to $1,500, with the possibility of a license suspension up to 90 days. If a violation results in injury to a child, additional legal penalties may apply.

Motorists are urged to be alert and patient in school zones, near bus stops, and in residential neighborhoods. The area immediately around a stopped school bus is often referred to as the "danger zone" where children are most at risk of being hit due to reduced visibility or unsafe crossings.

To support student safety, families are encouraged to review basic bus rules with their children. Students should arrive at their bus stop at least five to ten minutes early, stand back from the curb, and wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before boarding. When crossing in front of the bus, children should always make eye contact with the driver and check for traffic.

VWSD continues to promote transportation safety through training sessions, reminders, and district-wide protocols for students, staff, and drivers.
