Recess at Warrenton Elementary School just got a major upgrade this year, bringing two brand-new playgrounds to the campus.
For years, play options were limited and the existing structures were outdated. While previous efforts by the PTO helped add smaller additions, funding larger projects was a hurdle. "Playground equipment is expensive," explained Principal Ashley James, who is in her 19th year in education and her third as head principal at Warrenton Elementary.
Recognizing the need for modern play areas, Principal James collaborated with VWSD leadership to secure funding for campus-wide upgrades. The result is two separate, age-appropriate play areas: "one for Pre-K through 2nd grade, and our main playground for the older kids." The structures were carefully selected to meet safety standards while giving teachers clear visibility to monitor students during recess.
The excitement across the school and local community has been unanimous since the equipment went up.
"The kids were ecstatic about it because we hadn't had it for so long," said James. "The teachers were excited, and a lot of people in the community were excited as well—it was just a great new addition to the school. I just want to thank Dr. Holloway for allowing us to receive the new playground equipment. We all are excited about it, and we enjoy it!"
